Real transformations across industries using Object-Oriented UX methodology

Refreshing a revered publication for a new audience

Skills: product strategy, ideas to initiatives, UX and product collaboration, facilitating innovation, mobile product development, B2C

Issue

This national magazine has been published for almost 90 years, and I remember members of my family being avid subscribers. However, they have had an iOS app for a few years, and something needed to be added to distinguish it from the magazine.

Approach

As a Business Analyst for an iOS app team, I used an Object-Oriented UX framework to identify places where content could be connected within the app. I collaborated with the client to get them prioritized on their product roadmap.

One feature that stood out was the relationship between app users and products. Users could look at product reviews, but there needed to be a way to save them to a list on the app. The team added this critical feature. We also found a way to incorporate popular content pieces from the magazine into the existing content structure.

Result

The magazine's iOS app has a 4.8/5 ranking on the App Store. It also is responsible for over 1500 new digital subscriptions every month.

Simplifying 60 apps into one for a Fortune 100 financial powerhouse

Skills: product modernization, Agile product development, UX and product collaboration, roadmap development, ideas to initiatives, fintech, design systems

Issue

My client was a Fortune 100 financial behemoth, managing over $3 Trillion in assets.

A few years ago, you would be shocked if you looked at how their internal systems functioned. Over 60 internal databases held information about the company's assets, and many processes were still done manually.

Approach

When you think about digital transformations, this client was an excellent example of how a successful multi-year digital transformation worked. Successful does not mean *not messy*: a large part of this success is to be comfortable with ambiguity and in sorting out complex problems.

As the UX lead on the lead team for 15 Agile teams total, I was responsible for defining user components that were used throughout the loan process, such as user notifications, training, and onboarding, among others. These components have to work consistently across the user journeys for 40 distinct user roles in the system.

This was done in a SAFe (Scaled Agile Framework) environment of 12-15 Agile teams during the first two years of a multi-year digital transformation. Each Agile team was assigned one UX designer. When you put multiple UX designers in a room, you will get a lot of ideas and a lot of strong opinions.

Sometimes, difficult conversations about priorities need to happen. The Agile environment allowed difficult conversations to occur in a safe space where everyone involved could give feedback. OOUX methods helped guide these conversations, as OOUX is made from diverse teams to understand complex systems quickly.

The willingness to collaborate and share within and across Agile teams, particularly with development teams, was key to this project's success. As one of the UX leads, I took on a leadership and mentoring role as the project progressed.

Result

Adaption to the new platform was swift: over 90% of users switched to the new platform within six months of the initial MVP launch. The new platform features user interfaces that are customized to 40 different user roles, including loan originators, underwriters, investors, and many more.

Updating a homegrown app for tomorrow's needs

Skills: OOUX, ORCA, product modernization, Agile product development, facilitating collaboration, UX and product collaboration, B2B, government compliance

Issue

This compliance firm has been an expert in wireless compliance for decades. Their years-old internal site, while functional, needed to be adapted to new technology and new challenges. The old app was developed over the years on an ad-hoc basis and did not measure up to today's speed and security standards.

Approach

As the product strategy lead, I led my client through redesigning its internal site to accommodate its business needs into the future. This meant:

  • Building business logic into their system to help them get accurate recommendations to their customers
  • Building a tasking system to alert customers who need to send the company data while also allowing customers real-time access to the status of their compliance filings and reports
  • Incorporating financial applications through an API

I applied Object-Oriented UX principles using an ORCA (Objects, Relationships, Calls-to-Action, and Attributes) framework to do this. The ORCA process shines when dealing with complexity.

Result

With my ORCA process, I created a system architecture that allowed everyone on the team to understand a complex product quickly. This work allowed the development team to start strong and solve years-old problems in days. I used this system model to collaborate with the client and a UX designer to build a complete prototype of a complex product in under two months.
